BENTONITE

Bentonite, a prominent member of the clay family in mineralogy, emerges through the hydrothermal transformation or weathering of volcanic ash. Distinguished by the predominant cation composition within its structure, bentonite is typically categorized into two primary variants:

Sodium Bentonite (Na Bentonite)

Characterized by its remarkable ability to expand volumetrically upon contact with water (swelling), sodium bentonite forms colloids, exhibits high viscosity, and possesses adept water-binding capabilities, rendering it invaluable as a sealant with inherent self-sealing properties. Consequently, this variant finds extensive applications across diverse sectors including oil, gas, and geothermal drilling, metal casting, construction, formulation of paint additives, pharmaceutical raw materials, as well as in animal feed and fertilizer production.

Calcium Bentonite (Ca Bentonite)

In contrast, calcium bentonite exhibits a lower propensity for volumetric expansion upon water immersion. Nevertheless, once activated, it demonstrates a capacity for moderate water absorption and rapid settling without suspension formation Leveraging these attributes, calcium bentonite is primarily utilized as an absorbent agent and for color bleaching purposes.
